“…the course was informative and the practical aspect was engaging.”
OpenSKY Academy chooses to deliver aircraft maintenance courses differently.
We had the privilege of delivering our Radio Operator (Ground) course to five engineers at RGV Aviation, Gloucester Airport recently.
The one-day course comprised a morning of discussion and sharing of previous experiences using aircraft and mobile radio systems along with a mix of practical scenarios that the group worked through together. Later that afternoon, each delegate was assessed in the hangar on a live aircraft and worked through a complex aircraft movement scenario using the EGBJ Aerodrome (Gloucester Airport) chart.
On successful completion of the assessment, each delegate was issued a certificate of completion. As the course is benchmarked to UK CAP 413 and related publications, the certificate can use used in various ways by Part-145 / MROs including the issue of a local company approval to operate aircraft and mobile radios as part of the maintenance routines.
The course covers a number of topics including phraseology and regulations, the phonetic alphabet, aircraft radio equipment, the ATIS report, movement instructions including aircraft towing, airfield signage, mandatory readbacks, AGCS airfields, adverse and emergency procedures and, most topical with the UK CAA currently, how not to cause a runway incursion.
“The scenarios helped me be more confident in speaking to the Tower.”
Aircraft maintenance engineers don’t need a full Radio Telephony Licence to operate an aircraft radio for routine maintenance related tasks such as engine running, taxi, and towing. While there may be local airfield restrictions and requirements, often a simple and cost-effective training course like ours will be appropriate.

We’d love to hear from you if you would like us to run an in-person Radio Operator (Ground) course in your hangar.
